The son of Leonard and Hilda Garland. He married Hilda M G (Judy) Lee in 1939.

From 1929 -1931 he was living with Mrs. Stone in Richmond, and apprenticed to a small firm of Accountants in London. At that time apprentices were not paid so it was a very hard time for Gerald. He played rugby for "Barbarians" 5th Grade. In 1946 the family moved to 59 Fleet St., Aylesbury, with wife Judy (38), son Jeremy (5), and daughter Jennifer (3). Gerald worked in the Treasurer's Department of Bucks County Council. In retirement he moved to Dorchester, Dorset.
